On this portal, we are able to preserve our ancestral language, the Cupeño Language Pá'anexily. We are the keepers of life and knowledge, protecting our culture in songs, games, stories, myths, mathematics, and cultural rituals. This marvelous creation of language, along with our hunting and gathering, was passed down from generation to generation.
We will be sharing the Cupeño language and culture by providing access to recordings and teaching materials. These resources were gathered and created by tribal elders and present-day language speakers. We strive to encourage the Pala community to preserve our cultural ways. As a community, we want to engage and inspire others to learn our language, Cupeño (Pá’anexily).
We are digitally archiving various forms of data, hoping it will benefit us in our revitalization and preservation efforts. Presenting Cupeño on this platform will help us share information effectively during this digital age.
This forum was brought forth by an awarded grant, Pá'enexily (Cupeño) Covid-19 Teaching and Archiving Project, funded by the American Native Administration (ANA) in 2021. This language grant assists tribal people by connecting our ancestral ways to present generations. Our website will be managed by project team members, along with collaborating community members who continuously add content and information.
This website will serve as a digital archive, museum, and cultural resource for many generations to come. All content will be handled with respect and in a safe manner. If you have items you’d like to donate or have scanned to share with our archive, please email jmachado@palatribe.com.
